One of the Cardinal rules for making a hip hop song, or any song really, is to not date it. Meaning, do not give a specific day or year in the lyrics, because by the time the song comes out, it could be years later and lose the relevance of the present. Another topic I’ve generally avoided over the last 20 years is… Me. I’ve given snippets and tidbits here and there, but not a real introduction or detailed account of my journey in life. Well, I broke both of those tenets with this song I am calling “Who You? (Timestamp 5/22)”. Not only is it a detailed autobiography and thank you note to friends and family, but it also lets you know right off the bat that it is being recorded in May of 2022. What I didn’t realize until now, as I wrap up the final pieces of my first real solo project, is how much can change in one little year. The tragic passing of Loved Ones, falling out with lifelong friends, and even realizing the very words in this song were not a proper Expression of my love for my Family. I kept wanting to go back and amend things as life kept happening, but I had to quickly realize that leaving it as is, is the true art of it. That is the Moment captured in Time. I’ll Live with it.
